Carolina Rollergirls

On Saturday September 2nd, 2006, the Carolina Rollergirls strapped their skates on inside of the Key Arena in Seattle, Washington, to face seven of the top leagues from across the nation in the first women's flat track rollerderby tournament to be held in a professional sports venue. Hosted by Seattle's Rat City Rollergirls and One Reel Productions as part of the annual Bumbershoot festival, the tournament brought in over 20,000 fans through out the day. The game play was fierce and aggressive, proving to be an immense challenge for the Carolina team and an exciting sports spectacle for derby fans from all over the pacific northwest.

Carolina's first bout was against the hard hitting home town favorites, the Rat City Rollergirls, who pulled out to a 64 – 27 victory over the course of the twenty minute bout. Rat City would go on to place 2nd overall in the tournament, loosing to the undefeated Texas Rollergirls' Texacutioners in a dramatic 74 - 69 bout. In Carolina's second bout of the day, they suffered another disappointing loss to their old rivals, the Minnesota Rollergirls, in another grueling twenty minute, single period, bout that ended with a final score of 55 – 35. Minnesota would go on to finish fourth in the tournament loosing to Madisons's Dairyland Dolls who finished third overall. Carolina's third and final match up was against Oakland's Bay Area Derby Girls who they had the opportunity to play in the Dust Devil Tournament this past February in Tucson, AZ. Having improved greatly over the course of the year, Bay Area proved to be more than worthy opponents taking an early lead over Carolina, who held strong and slowly chipped away at the lead until they edged out Bay area for the 30-24 win. This left Carolina ranked sixth behind the fifth place Kansas City Roller Warriors, with Bay Area and the Boston Derby Dames ranked seventh and eighth respectively.

While the losses are heartbreaking, being part of yet another groundbreaking event in flat track rollerderby history is certainly an honor for our Carolina Rollergirls as they helped bring some of the best rollerderby action in the nation to over 20,000 fans.
