CAROLINA ROLLERGIRLS ROLLER DERBY | SEASON 3: BOUT 2 WRAPUP

Raleigh, North Carolina - May 14, 2006... Mother's Day at the Skate Ranch and love and respect for the moms was in the air. As the Wallace poem goes "the hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world", so give it up for all the moms in the world.

Aside from it being Mother's Day, it was also the debut bout of the Tai Chi-Tahs. Although there were lots of moms in attendance, there was not any nurturing going on the flat-track as the newest derby team in Brawleigh faced off with the veteran team of the Trauma Queens. The Queens lost to the Debs in bout one of the season and were looking to bounce back against the newbies. Not all of the Tai Chi-Tahs are rookies, even though the team is new, so this would not be a cakewalk for the Queens. The track is laid, the arena is packed, the moms are holding their breath and it is time to turn this mutha out.

The Tai Chi-Tahs kicked off the bout with 1 hard fought point by Violet Femme to give them the early lead at the beginning of the first period. Penelope Bruz followed up with 3 points for the Queens in the next jam to take a 3 to 2 lead. In the next jam, Roxy Rockett posted 4 points for the Queens to extend their lead to 7-2, but Violet Femme stormed back with 5 points for the Chi-Tahs in the next jam to even the score at 7. Roxy Rockett gave the Queens the lead again when she scored 2 points, but Maddat U put up 3 points of her own in the following jam to give the Chi-Tahs a 10 to 9 lead. The next jam saw Violet Femme racking up 6 points to extend the Chi-Tahs lead to 16-9. Roxy Rockett followed up with 4 points for the Queens and then Penelope Bruz scored 3 for the Queens to tie things up at 16. Neither team scored in the next jam, but Shirley Temper managed 3 points after that to give the Queens a 19-16 lead. What followed was a scoring frenzy, as Princess America racked up 8 points for the Chi-Tahs while Roxy Rockett put up 10 for the Queens making it a 29-24 lead for her team. Rookie skater Eris Discordia scored 5 points for the Chi-Tahs just before the end of the period to knot the score up at 29.

After a few false starts and scoreless jams to start off the second period, Eris Discordia scored 5 points for the Chi-Tahs while Shirley Temper scored 5 for the Queens to keep the score tied, this time at 34. Lucy Lastkiss squeaked out 1 point for the Queens in the next jam to give them a 35-34 lead, and then we were treated to another scoring frenzy with Violet Femme laying down 10 points for the Chi-Tahs and Penelope Bruz getting 8 for the Queens. The 1 point lead now favors the Chi-Tahs at 44-43, until a major scoring adjustment set the Chi-Tahs lead to 55-42. The Chi-Tahs extended their lead in the next jam behind Princess America's 3 points, giving her team a 58-42 lead. The following jam saw Violet Femme getting 5 points for the Chi-Tahs while DVS scored 4 for the Queens, followed by Eris Discordia's 1 point to give the Chi-Tahs a 64-46 lead. Another scoring adjustment reduced the Chi-Tahs lead a bit, leaving us with a score of 66-52.

Roxy Rockett scored 4 points in the next jam for the Queens while Eris Discordia only got 1 point for the Chi-Tahs, which cut into the Chi-Tahs lead. After a small scoring adjustment for the Queens, the Chi-Tahs now lead by a score of 67-59. Princess America followed that up with a whopping 12 points for the Chi-Tahs while Roxy Rockett only managed 4 points for the Queens, putting the Chi-Tahs in the lead 79 to 63. Violet Femme added another 4 points for the Chi-Tahs in the next jam and then Roxy Rockett added 3 points for the Queens after that to put us at 83-66, Chi-Tahs still leading. Another major scoring adjustment set the score to 91-75 with the Chi-Tahs still up, which was followed by yet another scoring frenzy. Violet Femme racked up 12 for the Chi-Tahs while Roxy Rockett posted 12 of her own for the Queens, which left us with the Chi-Tahs in the lead by a score of 103-87. The Chi-Tahs would only score 1 more point for the rest of the bout behind Eris Discordia as the Queens started to mount an exciting comeback. Shirley Temper got 5 points and then DVS got 3 for the Queens to cut the Chi-Tahs lead down to 104-95. In the final jam of the night, Penelope Bruz scored 8 points for the Queens, but it was not enough to take the win. The Tai Chi-Tahs take the win, 104-103.

This was a great bout right down to the last lap of the flat-track. Even with the Queens being down by so much, so late... they never gave up and almost pulled out their first win of the season. The win puts the Chi-Tahs in the company with the Queens as being the only teams to win their first bout in the Carolina league. There were lots of hits, lots of penalties and lots of rollergirls flying off the track into the crowd. It was a great scene, one that gets better with every bout. The rest of the third season will prove to be just as exciting as the three teams of the Carolina Roller Derby fight to hoist the golden skate.

Be sure to check out the next Carolina Rollergirls bout in June when the Tai Chi-tahs take on the Debutante Brawlers in bout 3 of the third season. Get yourself some tickets if you are near the Raleigh area or check out the local rollergirls in your area.
