CAROLINA ROLLERGIRLS ROLLER DERBY | SEASON 2: BOUT 3 WRAPUP
Raleigh, North Carolina - December 04, 2005... It is getting cold outside, but things are heating up at the Skate Ranch in Raleigh. The Debutante Brawlers and The Trauma Queens teamed up recently for their first interleague bout in Minneapolis against the Minnesota Rollergirls... but now it is business as usual. Today marks the third and final bout of the Fall 2005 season and it is setting up to be a good one. The Debs have taken the first two bouts of the season and thus have already assured themselves the championship. The bout means nothing in the standings, but it means everything to the brawlin' babes of brawleigh. The Queens have something to prove and the Debs are up for the scrap. The track is lit and the sellout crowd is foaming at the mouth as the season finale is ready to start. This one is not for all the marbles... this one is personal.

Everyone at the Skate Ranch could sense the tension building as the bout was about to begin. The Debs are looking to finish the season undefeated while the Queens are playing for pride. Neither team is going to come out with the victory easily... but as Pierre Corneille said, "Where there is no peril in the fight, there is no glory in the triumph."
It is no surprise that this was a hard fought battle... and for most of the bout, it could have gone either way. Teflon Donna (Debutante Brawlers) and Violet Femme (Trauma Queens) got the bout fired up by getting 4 points a piece but then the Debs took the lead behind Princess America's 3 points. In Jam #3 the Queens took the lead back when Terrordactyl scored 3 points while Shirley Temper finished the jam with -1 points after a delay of game penalty was assessed against the Debs. The Queens kept the lead until Zella Lugosi put up 9 points in the 5th jam to knot the score back up. The score remained tied until Ms. Fit scored 6 and Princess America scored 7 in back to back jams for the Debs, giving them a 7 point lead. The Debs remained in the lead and the closest that the Queens would get in the rest of the first half was when Violet Femme scored 4 points in Jam #13 to bring them within 3. But in the next jam, Teflon Donna racked up 9 points for the Debs that took them to halftime with a 55-43 lead.
At the half, the large and active crowd at the Skate Ranch was treated to a musical set by Hearts and Daggers. They had a nice rock, country and blues mix... with a little bit of rockabilly going. They put on a good show and the crowd seemed to respond well. After the band finished rocking the ranch, it was time to spin the wheel of misfortune. Penelope Bruz of the Trauma Queens and Magic Wanda of the Debutante Brawlers watched as the wheel spun up arm wrestling as the challenge... and they both seemed more than up for it. After a good struggle, Penelope Bruz came up with the win for the Queens and her team was awarded 1 extra point. After the penalty challenge and a slight scoring adjustment, the score is now 54-44 to start the final half.
The second half gets started with the Debs lead now standing at 10 and it would jump to 14 after Ms. Fit put up 4 points in Jam #16. The Debs lead grew to 15 until Eva Lye scored 5 points in Jam #20 to cut the lead back down to 10 and then Terrordactyl followed that up with a whopping 8 points for the Queens to bring them within 2. In the subsequent jams, the Debs put more space between them and the Queens behind the scoring of Teflon Donna, Princess America and Zella Lugosi. It looked like the Debs were starting to take control until Violet Femme racked up 9 points for the Queens in Jam #25 to cut the lead down to 1. The score remained tight until Ms. Fit put 6 points on the board for the Debs with just over 2 minutes left in the bout to put her team up by 11. With the crowd on their feet, the Queens managed to knock the lead back down to 9 behind the scoring of Violet Femme and the huge jammer takeout of Militia but ultimately ran out of time... and the undefeated Debs were victorious behind a score of 103-94.

Point leaders for the Debutante Brawlers were Teflon Donna with 32, Zella Lugosi with 26 and Princess America with 25. The high scorers for the Trauma Queens were Violet Femme with 33 and Terrordactyl along with Kitty Crowbar each with 14. These jammers can't score these points without the help of their great offensive blockers. Maddat U led the Debutante Brawlers with 7 offensive blocks and Violet Femme led the Trauma Queens with 4. The whips have gotten more numerous and more effective. Leading the Debutante Brawlers in whips was Fanta C with 2 and leading the Trauma Queens was Militia with 4 whips of her own.
While the offense keeps Violator busy keeping score, the defensive takeouts get the crowd worked into a frenzy. Teflon Donna led the Debutante Brawlers in jammer takeouts with 8 while Fanta C and Leadfoot each had 3. For the Trauma Queens... Concrete Blondie, Penelope Bruz and Violet Femme led with 3 each. Sometimes the rules get thrown out the window and someone has to pay. Leadfoot, Magic Wanda and Ms. Fit each had 1 penalty for the Debutante Brawlers while Penelope Bruz and Violet Femme both had 2 for the Trauma Queens.
Once again, I was totally impressed with the skills that the Carolina Rollergirls exhibited. Each bout is better than the other, and I think this was their best one yet. Their recent interleague bout seemed to toughen them up even more and better prepare them for battle with each other. The intensity and the speed of the skaters seem to increase each time, and their confidence on wheels is very evident. All of the practicing and all of the training is really paying off. The veteran skaters are showing great leadership in the rink and with new blood in training, the future is looking bright. As the fans grasp a better understanding of the rules and get to know the personalities of the skaters, the energy in the ranch seems to feed the skaters and the skaters feed the crowd. It is a great scene and if you have not been to a bout yet, you should really get out and be a part of it. Season two was the best one yet and next season promises to be even better.
