CAROLINA ROLLERGIRLS ROLLER DERBY | SEASON 2: BOUT 2 WRAPUP

Raleigh, North Carolina - November 06, 2005... The fall season is upon us. I don't mean fall as in autumn, with the leaves changing colors and the temps slowly dropping. I am talking about the real deal fall... as in the bone crunching, elbow slangin', wheeled boot to the butt kind of fall. The kind of fall that only the brusin' babes of brawleigh can bring. Season 2 continues to roll on as bout 2 is about to get started. A sellout crowd is rocking the Skate Ranch. The track is lit and the brawl is on. Here come the Carolina Rollergirls.

Revenge is on the menu again for The Trauma Queens as they were edged out in the first bout by The Debutante Brawlers and they want to capture that winning feeling. But it won't come lightly... the reigning champs aren't going to go down without a fight... and a fight is what we got. Intensity fills the air as the bout is about to begin. To quote Lily Tomlin, "Things are going to get a lot worse before they get worse."

The Debutante Brawlers took the lead from the beginning and never really looked back. Things were still close until Jam #3 when the Debs broke out to a 17-3 lead... and the Queens didn't get close again until Jam #10 when they cut the lead back down to 7 points. But the Debs started pulling away again and the first half ended with them out in front of the Queens by a score of 61 to 46.

At the half, the sell-out crowd at the Skate Ranch was treated to a musical set by The Dirty Little Heaters. Where else can you go on a Sunday and catch an ass-kicking on wheels, a concert and possibly a rollergirl in your lap all on the same day? Fans were also privy to the announcement of the lineup for the Carolina Rollergirls first interleague bout, which takes place in Minneapolis on November 18th against the Minnesota Rollergirls. After the announcement, it was back to business... and time to spin the wheel of misfortune. The wheel landed on limbo and I gotta say that these ladies could really get down low on those skates. The Debutante Brawlers edged out the win in the halftime challenge and were awarded 1 extra point to start the second half.

The final half gets started with the Debs on top by 16 points and things would only get worse for the Queens when the Debs threw up an impressive 19 points in Jam #18. The Trauma Queens found themselves in quite a hole, and were even down by 38 points with about 9 minutes left in the bout. It appeared that it was time to throw in the towel, but all of these ladies have hearts of lions and will not stop fighting until the last second ticks off that clock. After putting up 26 points combined in 2 consecutive jams, the Queens managed to cut the lead down to 9 with less than 30 seconds left in the bout. We were seeing the beginning of a helluva comback, but time was on the Debs side and when all was said and done... it was The Debutante Brawlers winning by a score of 117-104.

Point leaders for the Trauma Queens were Violet Femme with 44, Teflon Donna with 35 and Kitty Crowbar with 15. High scorers for The Debutante Brawlers were Roxy Rockett with 45, Zella Lugosi with 26 and Shirley Temper with 22. These high scoring jammers can't do it alone and had great help from their blockers. Leading The Trauma Queens in offensive blocking was Penelope Bruz with 15 and leading The Debutante Brawlers was Maddat U with 8. They also had help in the form of whips that even Devo would be proud of. Militia led The Trauma Queens with 5 whips while Julie Jawbreaker and Maddat U each had 2 for The Debutante Brawlers.

It's not all about offense... there is the matter of taking out the other team's jammers. Eva Lye and Penelope Bruz led The Trauma Queens with 7 jammer take-outs each and Fanta C, Julie Jawbreaker, Leadfoot and Roxy Rockett led The Debutante Brawlers with 3 each. Somtimes they bend the rules and have to spend a little time in the sin bin. Penelope Bruz and Violet Femme each had 3 penalties for The Trauma Queens while Ms. Fit led The Debutante Brawlers in penalties with 2.

The ladies of Brawleigh continue to impress. Each week they get better and better. The skating gets faster, the hitting gets harder and the intensity levels rise. They put on a great show and are getting quite a following in the Triangle area. Along with the sell-out crowd of rowdy derby groupies, one of the local TV stations was there along with a crew from PBS which will air some derby info next week. It is great to see the outpouring of support and we are looking for even bigger and better things from the Carolina Rollergirls in the future. Unfortunately, the final bout of the season in December will not mean much in the standings as the Debs have already taken the first 2 bouts of the season and will be the champs. Fortunately for us, that means that all bets are off and this one will be personal... so it should be a good one.
