CAROLINA ROLLERGIRLS ROLLER DERBY | SEASON 2: BOUT 1 WRAPUP
Raleigh, North Carolina - October 2nd, 2005... Sunday, Bloody Sunday. This day marks the debut of the 2005 fall roller derby season here in Brawleigh... and the Buried.com staff was there. The place... the lighted flat track at the Skate Ranch, the time... 6:00 PM. Bring on those rowdy, roller derby ladies. The large crowd was ripe with anticipation as the introductions began. With flash bulbs a blazin', cheers began to echo throughout the skate ranch as The Debutante Brawlers and The Trauma Queens made their way to the shiny floored arena. The crowd is roaring, the disco balls are spinning and the wheeled warriors are on the scene... it is time to throw down at the showdown in uptown.

After The Debutante Brawlers championship win in the inagural season this past spring, The Trauma Queens were out looking for a little revenge. Both teams took to the rink with fire in their eyes, wheels strapped to their feet and looking hungry for some guts and glory. When William Congreve penned the line "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned", he must have been watching a derby bout... because fury was on the menu and the dinner bell was ringing.
The Trauma Queens got off to an early start and held the lead until the beginning of the fifth jam, when the teams were tied at 30. By the time jam seven rolled around, The Debutante Brawlers had clawed their way back from the deficit to take the lead. It looked like the Debs were starting to run away with things when they extended their lead to ten points shortly after the second half began. Never ones to give up, the Queens ate into the lead little by little until they got the score all squared at 78... and then managed to take the lead back with around 3 minutes left in the bout. But, the Deb's were too strong down the stretch and were able to keep the Queens scoreless in one of the remaining jams, giving them the lead for good.
So with 2 full halves of bone-jarring hits and wheel-melting skating... it is time to tally the points. In a hard fought bout, the Debutante Brawlers take the first win of the fall 2005 season with a final score of 91-86 over the Trauma Queens. This one could have gone either way at any point. Each team had the lead several times, only to watch their opponents come storming back to turn the tides.
Point leaders for the Trauma Queens were Violet Femme with 32, Ms. Anthrope with 24 and Kitty Crowbar with 14. High scorers for The Debutante Brawlers were Roxy Rockett with 30, Teflon Donna with 20 and Maddat U with 16. These high scoring jammers can't do it alone and had great help from their blockers. Leading The Trauma Queens in offensive blocking was Militia with 4 and leading The Debutante Brawlers were Roxy Rockett and Zella Lugosi with 6 a piece. It's not all about offense... there is the matter of taking out the other team's jammers. Eva Lye and Violet Femme led The Trauma Queens with 3 jammer take-outs each and Julie Jawbreaker led The Debutante Brawlers with 4 of her own.

The roller derby is not all skates and elbows, they also hit hard with live entertainment during the half. After many furious skate jams, next comes the time when the band jams. We were all treated to a live set by Van Serpico, El Sucio, Hunny Goodnight and Max Diablo of The Malamondos. Dig those high-heeled boots that lead singer Hunny Goodnight was wearing!
After the tunes, it was time to play the wheel. Not that one with Pat Sajak... but the derby penalty wheel.... which is acclaimed as either a wheel of mis-fortune or a chance for these skaters to win an extra point for their team. After spinning the wheel, it was determined that Penelope Bruz (Trauma Queens) and Busty O'Lipp (Debutante Brawlers) had to go head-to-head in an arm wrestling match. In a quick and decisive win, Busty O'Lipp was awarded an extra point for her team. While one point did not make a huge difference in this particular bout, it could determine the outcome of an upcoming bout.
These bruisin' babes of Brawleigh put on a great show. They put their hearts, soul and bodies into this bout and all of their hard work and dedication are really starting to show more and more as the bouts go on. The skillfully executed skating kept the pace at a neck breaking speed and the furious action made it exciting for all.
